Cement Safety

Here are a few commonsense tips that can prevent problems when cementing.

  • Carefully plan all of the steps of the project, don't rush into the job to get it done and don't work when you're tired. That's when accidents happen.

  • Keep wet mortar or concrete out of eyes by wearing goggles to avoid irritation. Similarly, wear goggles to protect the eyes from flying chips and dust when cutting bricks or concrete with a chisel or cutting blade.

  • Cement based dust can be hazardous to your health so wear an appropriate dust mask as a safeguard.

  • Use your wheelbarrow or hand truck when shifting cement bags … it’s better for your back and reduces fatigue. When loading a wheel barrow, always place the bulk of the load over the wheel to make total task easier for the user.

  • Beware of your back when lifting cement bags … especially lifting in and out of the car boot Keep your lower back in its normal position and use your leg muscles to lift, keeping your head up. Pick up your feet to twist and turn- do not pivot your spine. Use your leg muscles and back to lower in the same manner as lifting.

  • Dermatitis and other skin complaints can result from contact with doth dry and wet cement based products. Always wear gloves … preferably heavy duty PVC. Gardening gloves with pigskin or PVC inserts offer a lesser degree of protection whilst fabric gloves should be avoided. Protect other parts of your body with adequate protective clothing.

  • Always wash out work clothes splashed with cement based products separately at the end of each day.
