Drilling A Perpendicular Hole

Drilling a perfectly perpendicular hole can be a real challenge. Using a drill press is the easiest way to drill a hole that's exactly perpendicular to a surface.

But sometimes it’s not practical to use a press which means you must drill freehand; here are a few techniques to ensure that your holes end as perpendicular as possible.

Drill & Square

Portable Drill Press

Drill Bubble Level

Dowel Jig

Hold or clamp a framing square or combination square on the work surface just beyond the hole. Use it to line up the shank of the bit with the square's edge.

Use a portable drill press that mounts the drill to a carriage that slides up and down on two guide rods. The press's base plate sits flat on the work surface, allowing you to drill perfect holes every time.

Some drills come with small bubble level vials built into the rear section of the body. Aligning the bubbles with their centre marks ensures the drill bit is plumb.

For dowel joints, the best solution is to use a dowel jig. This jig ensures that the hole you are drilling is at the correct angle to the wood.
