Remove general soil and grit with detergent and water.
With steel wool, emery cloth or a wire brush remove all loose peeling paint and
rust. Wipe surface using cloth dampened with turps or vinegar.
If the metal is bare, you can
treat the surface with a rust converter that changes the molecular structure of
the surface to a rust resisting finish. Check with our paint department for a
suitable product.
No paint will stick to a greasy or wet surface. First coat
should be a "metal primer" or "rust retardant" type paint.
The second coat can be of enamel or paint suitable for place item is to be used,
usually outdoor enamel. Exterior house and trim paints normally dry too soft for
this use.
Allow paint to cure thoroughly
before use, especially in the case of furniture. Having people stuck to their
seats at a BBQ is embarrassing!
Small chips or scratches that
appear in the future should be touched up
immediately with primer followed by matching paint to prevent rust forming.
