Prime or Undercoat?

Do I need to prime or undercoat?

Primer - provides protection and adhesion and should be used on any bare wood, or metal, or old wood that has been sanded back.

Sealer - sealers will stop the paint from being absorbed, and should be used on plasterboard, cement render, masonry, ceilings.

Undercoat - is mainly used to build surface protection, particularly in full weather conditions. Also useful when painting light shades over a darker existing paint finish.
