When laying bricks or discussing
bonds it is important to know what a "Stretcher" and "Header" are
... and what on earth is a "frog".
Every trade has its own language. Here's a few that you'll
need to know if you want to be a "DIY Brickie".

Stretcher ... laid lengthwise in a wall.
Header ... laid through a wall, at right angles
to stretchers.
Soldier ... stood on end. |

Frog ... A depression in one (or sometimes
both) of the bed surfaces of a pressed back.
Arris ... The sharp edge formed by any two
surfaces meeting at an angle.
Head ... The short surface of a brick which may
or may not be exposed in a wall.
Face ... The long surface of an exposed brick,
or the exposed surface of a wall. |
